The minimum you should know about podcasting

Podcasting is a way to get published audio files automatically over the Internet. Users subscribe to a feed of new files (usually in MP3 format) that interest them.

Podcasting enables anyone to produce self-published, syndicated radio show. Podcasts are subscription based, which means that listeners need to be subscribed to the RSS (Really Simple Syndication) or Atom feed using ”podcatching” software in order to receive the audio files. The podcatching software automatically checks and downloads the new content. Any computer with audio playing software (such as Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, QuickTime, iTunes) or any digital audio player can play podcasts at the listener’s leisure. Since 2005 this technique can deliver video files as well.

The word iPod and broadcasting combined together and that is where the podcasting name is from. “The term can be misleading since neither podcasting nor listening to podcasts requires an iPod or any portable music player. [Wikipedia]
